This is part 1 in a three part article.
I am sure you must have experienced this scenario before. We attend an intense two day training session conducted by the training department on a new product. At the end of two days, we are all expected to become experts in the product and go out and convince our customers to buy our new product. And the training always ends with, “we are here to answer any question you might have.” Some of us are sold on the idea on selling the new products and a majority of us aren’t too sure how to sell this product. The most passionate believers are the ones that take the trouble to ask questions and follow up with the trainers while the rest passively consume information if it comes their way or forget most of the knowledge they gained during the training session.
If you analyze this scenario, there are three gaps in the training model:
- How do we ensure learners retain the knowledge gained during the training program?
- How do we continuously reinforce training?
- How do we help the learner apply the training concepts on the job and thereby maximize training impact?
First of all, ALM provides a convenient platform for delivering bite-sized chunks of content that can include tips, best practices, training concepts, product features in any format – text, images, or audio. The platform can accommodate multiple channels to stream content pertaining to diverse topics. As a user, I can open the channel pertaining to the new product and access handy information that will help me brush up on the training and equip myself with just the right information before my call with a customer. All this information and insights are available in my Smartphone or Tablet. I don’t have to wade through a clunky LMS system and go through the mind-numbing courseware on the product again.
Stay tuned for my next post for some additional feature highlights from ALM that addresses key training challenges.
